The Yorkshire Icon School presents and Icon Retreat
In recent times Icons have become more widely used and venerated in the Western Church. They have a depth and power which draws one into a deeper prayer life. Icons, for all their newness in the west, are part of the ancient common heritage of our Church. They have always been a means of communication of the Gospel.

The Yorkshire Icon School is a small group of Iconographers, led by the Revd Canon Ian Holdsworth, who are committed to establishing Icons within the mainstream of our Church life. The course is led by Ian who, before he was ordained, trained at Sheffield Polytechnic Faculty of Art. Since then he has studied Iconography in Serbia, Russia, Italy and many schools in this country. He has led very successful courses, with each participant completing a satisfactory Icon.

The Yorkshire Icon School course in Hornsea will be held at St Nicholas Church Rooms, Newbegin, Hornsea, HU18 1AB with permission from the Vicar, the Reverend Tina Stevens.

It would seem to many that this is a daunting task, especially for those who have no formal artistic training. To give way to those thoughts is to misunderstand our aims. Many have come on our Icon courses who have not painted since leaving school. At the end of the course they have been able to produce an Icon which is more than acceptable and have been surprised by what they have achieved. No previous experience is needed, just a willingness to have a go. Guidance will be given at all stages so that you may be assured that you will produce a satisfactory Icon by the conclusion of the course. There is no expectation of previous skills and therefore those who are complete beginners will be able to conclude this task in a manner that is pleasing.

We will be using the Russian float method to produce our Icons, which is particularly suitable for those who have never painted an Icon or used these traditional pigments. The subject will follow the example of St Nicholas on the cover or you may write an Icon of Christ Pantocrator that we will be using as our exemplar, which is to be found in the Monastery of St Catherine in Sinai. The original is 6th century and is an encaustic on a wood panel.

We will be following the same practices as the ancient Novgorod School of Iconographers, using the traditional materials of 22ct Gold, Earth and Metal pigments on a Linden wood panel covered with marble gesso, prepared by the traditional methods under the supervision of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Balkans.
Each day start at 9:30am and finishes at 4:30pm.
We begin with prayer as this is a prayer activity, teaching us to contemplate at a deep level.

All equipment and materials are included in the price. A light lunch is provided, as are refreshments throughout the day. The dates of the course are Mondays 25th October, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th November 2021. The cost of the course is £185.
